Frequently Asked Questions

• 1Where is the emergency key hidden in Toyota Sienna minivan models?

The emergency key in Toyota Sienna models slides out from the side of the key fob. You press a small button on the side of the fob and pull the metal key blade outward. This emergency key unlocks the driver’s door manually when your key fob battery fails.

Toyota designed this system for all their smart key fobs from 2004 onwards. The Sienna follows the same emergency key location as other Toyota models.

• 2Why won't my Toyota Prius start with a new key?

Toyota Prius vehicles require specific programming for new keys due to their hybrid system integration. The new key must communicate with both the engine control unit and the hybrid battery management system.

MyLock locksmiths program Prius keys using specialized diagnostic equipment. The process takes longer than standard Toyota vehicles because hybrid models need additional security protocols.

Your Prius may also require all existing keys to be present during programming. This security feature prevents unauthorized key creation.

• 3How can I access my Toyota Tacoma if the smart key battery dies?

Your Toyota Tacoma has multiple access options when the smart key battery fails. First, remove the emergency key from inside your key fob by pressing the release button.

Use this emergency key to unlock the driver’s door manually. The key slot is typically hidden under a small cover on the door handle.

To start your Tacoma, hold the dead key fob against the start button. The vehicle’s backup system can detect the key’s transponder chip even without battery power.

• 4Why do Toyota RAV4 keys from 2018-2022 seem to have more battery drain issues compared to other Toyota models?

Toyota RAV4 models from this period communicate more frequently with the vehicle’s security system. The increased communication cycles drain the CR2032 battery faster than older Toyota models.

Environmental factors also affect battery life. Australian climate conditions can impact battery performance in key fobs.

However, battery drain varies between individual vehicles. Some RAV4 owners report normal battery life while others experience faster drainage.

• 5How does the key replacement process differ between Toyota hybrid models (Prius, Camry Hybrid) and standard petrol Toyota vehicles?

Toyota hybrid models require additional programming steps compared to standard petrol vehicles. Hybrid systems have more complex security protocols that protect the high-voltage battery system.

The programming process takes longer for hybrid vehicles. Standard Toyota models typically require 30-45 minutes for key programming, while hybrid models can take 60-90 minutes.

Hybrid vehicles also need communication with additional control modules. The hybrid battery management system must recognise the new key before allowing vehicle operation.

MyLock locksmiths use specialized diagnostic equipment for both vehicle types. However, hybrid programming requires additional security clearances and verification steps.
